Fallen - A Tragedy’s Bitter End

Words like heavy, slow, dark and glum might be the best words to describe a band like ”Fallen”. The inheritance from the old ”Funeral”-album ”Tragedies” is clearly present, which is really not that strange considering the fact that the drums are manned by Anders Eek and Christian Loos plays the guitar.

In addition to this, Kjetil Ottersen joins in on vocals, synth and piano, which creates a greater depth musically, compared to what I’ve heard from these guys in the past (in ”Funeral” amongst others).

Now to the music portion... Is it good? Surprisingly enough, yes! If you expect technical passages or impetuous pace shifts, this is not your cup of tea. This is good ”Doom Metal” to use the proper word, with a sacred feel to it (largely because of Ottersen’s vocals). One might say ”I’ve heard all this before”, without straying to much from the truth, but the main difference from earlier stuff is that the melodies gradually grow with each listen through. The opening track ”Gravdans” has in my world at least, proven to be a small favorite. There is undoubtedly a hint of ”My Dying Bride” in their songs, but that doesn’t really matter as long as they keep on choosing good solutions to prevent it from being an assumed copy.

Is this something I’d personally listen frequently to in the future? No.. It gets to slow after a while for an old Prog Rocker. But it is definitely worth a listen, no matter what genre of Metal you’re into, because like I said; it is a very good and consistent album. It may feel kind of repetitive after a while, but that may have more to do with my personal view of the genre than anything else. If you value bands like ” My Dying Bride”, old ”Cathedral”, and ”Funeral” deeply, this album is a definitive must for your collection.
